On 18 June 2025 the U.S. Supreme Court, 6–3, upheld Tennessee’s law banning puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries on minors. United States v. Skrmetti.
Tennessee found those treatments can leave a child irreversibly sterile, and that minors cannot fully understand what is being done to them. The Court held that the Constitution does not forbid a state from acting on that.
The highest court in the country said states may protect children. Dozens of states have already moved. KFF’s tracker, updated 14 August 2026, counts 27 states with laws or policies limiting youth access.
