Pakistan’s Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2018 is an identity-paper law.
The official National Assembly Act (Act No. XIII of 2018) issues a certificate of identity and recognition of a transgender person. On 19 May 2023 the Federal Shariat Court, in Shariat Petition No. 05/I of 2020 and connected petitions, struck sections 2(f), 2(n)(iii), 3, and 7 — the self-perceived identity and NADRA registration sections — as contrary to Islamic injunctions.
