This is Queensland’s public system, not a Commonwealth ban. NSW, Victoria, and Canberra have not banned blockers.
On 28 January 2025 the Director-General issued health service directive QH-HSD-058. On 28 October 2025 the Supreme Court of Queensland set that directive aside. The same day, Health Minister Tim Nicholls issued Ministerial Direction QH-MD-002 under section 44 of the Hospital and Health Boards Act 2011. It operates from 28 October 2025 (later amended 15 January 2026).
The official text: no new patient under 18 is to start Stage 1 (puberty blockers) or Stage 2 (cross-sex hormones) for gender dysphoria. Current patients may continue where clinically indicated. Blockers and sex hormones for other conditions still get prescribed. Private prescribing is not what that direction governs.
Queensland later said the pause continues pending the UK PATHWAYS trial. On 19 December 2025 Minister Nicholls timed that wait to 2031. See the Vine review statement. That is a public-system restriction waiting on an English experiment. It is not a national Australian ban.
