A Health Service Directive from 28 January 2025, then a Ministerial Direction operating from 28 October 2025 (amended 15 January 2026), stops new patients under 18 from starting Stage 1 (puberty blockers) or Stage 2 (opposite-sex hormones) for gender dysphoria in public hospitals. Current patients may continue where clinically indicated. Precocious puberty and other non-dysphoria uses still get treated. Private prescribing is not what that direction governs.
On 19 December 2025 Health Minister Tim Nicholls published the Vine independent review and said the pause continues pending results of the UK PATHWAYS trial, due in 2031. The direction is to be reviewed by 28 January 2032. Queensland is waiting on an English experiment because the evidence was never there. See the Vine statement, United Kingdom, and PATHWAYS.
